This box is used to enter your search criteria.  You have a number of options in using this box, you can create a simple search for a word as in and a list of  topics that contain the word glycerin will be returned.

You can make your search more complex by using more than one word.  Multiple words can be combined using the AND or OR options.  Typing will return a list of topics that contain both words while will return a list of topics that contain either word (including those that contain both words).

You can use the NOT option as in which will return a list of topics that contain the word glycerin and do not contain the word nitro.

Other options include using the number of words between you choice as in which wil return a list of topics that contain the word glycerin and within 5 words also have the word nitro.

There are wild cards available by using the symbols * and ?.  * is used to replace any number of characters and ? is used to replace one character.  Typing will return a list of topics that contain words beginning with gl as in glycerin, glucose, etc. while would return a list of topics containing words like hemo, hema, etc.

Parentheses can be used to express the logic of your search.  For example could be interpreted as (apple and pear) or orange matching "apple pear" and "orange" or it could mean apple and (Pear or orange) matching "apple pear" and "apple orange".  By using the parenthesis you make your criteria more explicit, typing is more clearly stated than without the parenthesis.
