eMedicine Code of Ethics
1.
eMedicine.com, Inc, henceforth referred to as eMedicine, is dedicated to
providing up-to-date, peer-reviewed medical information. This
information may be accessed in various ways; however, the primary
delivery portal is the Internet. The free availability of our medical
journals online reflects the commitment of eMedicine to disseminate
knowledge to the widest possible audience, including individuals,
groups, or populations that may not otherwise have access to such
medical information.
2. eMedicine is committed
to publishing medical journals of high quality. To achieve this end, all
eMedicine topics are reviewed and edited by 4 physicians and a doctor of
pharmacy. eMedicine strives to ensure that any claims relating to the
benefits of a specific treatment, commercial product, or service are
supported by appropriate, balanced evidence. Therefore, each article
contains references to sources used when writing the topic and the date
when clinical information was last modified.
3.
eMedicine respects and values the sanctity of the physician-patient
relationship. Information provided by eMedicine is designed to support,
not replace, the relationships that exist among patients and their
physicians and other health care providers. Accordingly, eMedicine's
authors and editors do not provide patient consultation through email.
4. eMedicine's owners, staff, authors, editors,
and advertisers maintain the confidentiality of the identity of
individual patients whose cases may be presented and that of visitors to
the eMedicine Web site.
5. eMedicine is a
privately held organization. Advertising by commercial and noncommercial
organizations that provide funding, services, or materials for eMedicine
activities does not influence medical content. eMedicine's advertising
and promotional material is subject to review by the Ethics Committee
and is presented to viewers in a manner and context that facilitates
differentiation between the advertising and promotional material and the
original textual information.
6. eMedicine does
not endorse any medical institution, biomedical technology, or
pharmaceutical product. Furthermore, eMedicine requires authors to
report any conflict of interest (eg, financial interest in any medical
companies, pharmaceutical company funding of topic-related research) and
posts such disclosures in each article.

information, contact Lynn
Barkley Burnett, EdD, MS, Chair, eMedicine Ethics
Committee.
